Statistics at AS Level: A Wealth of Teaching Approaches for the New Specifications

Maths

It will give practical advice on how to teach topics and provide both paper-based and electronic resources to support your teaching as well as demonstrate the relevance of statistical techniques to real world situations.

Supporting Gifted & Talented Pupils in a KS3 Mathematics Classroom

Maths
Adults and children alike know the feeling of being ‘stuck’ in a maths lesson. In common with all pupils, able mathematicians require support from LSAs. In a top set there is still a wide ability range and pupils although able, can struggle; their confidence may be fragile. Often, able mathematicians find it particularly difficult to ask for help. LSAs need confidence and sensitivity to intervene appropriately to offer their support.

Supporting Dyscalculic Students in Secondary Schools

Maths
Special Needs & Schools
Delegates will understand what dyscalculia is and how it impinges on
a secondary student’s learning, self-esteem and possible achievement
across the curriculum.

Taking the FEAR out of Maths at Key Stage 3 and 4 - Leading on to a GCSE qualification

Maths
Delegates will understand why and how the FEAR OF MATHS can develop; also how it impinges on secondary students' maths learning, self-esteem and achievement in other aspects of the curriculum.

Delegates will develop strategies to use within the maths classroom to help students overcome this FEAR and achieve qualifications in GCSE maths. Delegates will also be made aware of additional resources specifically designed with these students in mind.

Teachers of Standard Grade Mathematics

Maths
The aims of Standard Grade courses at all levels are "most likely fulfilled by a course which is designed to encourage pupil participation...while exposition by the teacher and practice exercises by pupils will have a prominent place - these activities alone would not allow the aims to be achieved."
This course will provide teachers with a variety of 'high-tech' and 'low-tech' activity-based approaches to all areas of the curriculum that integrate different learning styles into schemes of work rather than regarding mathematics as a series of techniques to learn by rote.

Teaching Gifted & Talented Mathematicians at KS3

Maths
As able pupils move from KS2 to KS3 they look forward to being taught by a maths specialist. Often at KS2 their needs will have been met by acceleration through content, resulting in pupils with a narrow view of maths and an over reliance on learnt methods - rather than a thorough understanding and an ability to apply their knowledge. Delegates will participate in practical activities that can be used in a mixed ability classroom to enrich and extend able pupils - and raising attainment for all.

Teaching Mathematics to Ethnic Minority Boys

Maths
This course will focus on narrowing the gender gap between ethnic minority boys and girls mathematical achievement. Whilst girls are often happy with knowledge-based activities, boys' learning is more focused on skill and understanding. This course will provide delegates practical advice on how to plan Outstanding Mathematics Lessons for ethnic minority boys in order to raise their mathematical achievement and attainment.

The Brand New Maths Teacher

Maths
The course will offer advice from various sources - including OfSTED - on good practice, the teaching environment and behaviour management. In addition, delegates will work through a bank of entertaining maths activities, ready to take back to the classroom.

The Learning Support Assistant in the KS3 Numeracy Lesson

Maths
This course is aimed at LSAs who want to have a clearer overview of the Maths National Curriculum and the Numeracy Framework at KS3, and who want to develop a repertoire of lively activities with which to inspire and stimulate their pupils.

Using an Interactive Whiteboard to improve motivation, understanding and performance in Mathematics at KS3 & KS4

Maths
This course will focus on the practical aspects of successfully integrating an interactive whiteboard into your lessons through an in-depth exploration of some key maths software packages and freely available web resources.

Using Autograph to Enhance Success in AS and A2 Mathematics

Maths
This course will focus on the practical aspects of using ICT within the teaching and learning of mathematics and help you to bring the subject to life. Part of the morning session will focus on the unique online bridging course Alan has developed to ease the transition of students progressing from GCSE to AS level. Implementation of these techniques have demonstrably improved the retention, enthusiasm and success levels of Advanced Level Maths students.

Using ICT to Inspire when Teaching 11-16 Maths

Maths
Delegates will be introduced to web resources and dynamic software that can be used to help pupils to visualise topics in KS3 and KS4 Mathematics. The assumption is that a web-connected computer and data projector are available in delegates' classrooms. Delegates will take away a large number of ideas for using the web for classroom interjections and for using Autograph effectively on the big screen.

A High Grade Framework for Media Studies

You will learn how to save your movie for playback on a DVD player or computer and how to send it by email.

An Introduction to Website Design using Adobe Dreamweaver

Media Studies
The course will train delegates to recognise structure and basic functionality of a website. They will do so by using Adobe Dreamweaver and by the end of the course you will build, design, and upload a website.
