AS Module M1: Mechanics: Developing subject knowledge and promoting understanding

The workshop is designed to provide teachers with the personal competences, knowledge and skills to teach and examine M1 Mechanics at A-level. It will focus on developing subject knowledge in addition to providing some practical guidance and learning approaches to help students understand the subject.

Aims of the course are to:

To experience teaching approaches that actively engage students in their learning
To explore and discuss the use of concept questions to improve and develop understanding
To provide opportunities for hands-on experience of solving problems in Mechanics
Effective teaching and learning strategies in mechanics using a variety of resources

Who should attend?
The workshop is suitable for all specifications and has been designed for teachers who are fairly new to teaching the subject and for those who are looking for fresh ideas to teach Mechanics. It will also provide some practical guidance for teaching the subject. Taken with ‘Teaching Mechanics for the first time’, the two workshops are aimed at providing a good preparation for teachers to teach Mechanics for the first time.

10:00	Using concept questions to improve and develop understanding The use of concept questions in the learning of mechanics The use of concept questions to challenge and develop student understanding	13:45	Vectors in Mechanics A review of the basic concepts of force, equilibrium, statics and dynamics setting the scene for the use of vectors in modelling force and motion. The use of vectors in Mechanics problem solving
11:00	Coffee	14:30	Projectile Motion This session with explore the motion of an object under the force of gravity. This will include vertical motion and motion in two dimensions (which is an M2 topic for some specifications).
11:15	Techniques to Engage Students in Mechanics Introducing new topics in Mechanics through paired group work discussions Further techniques to develop student understanding Quirky links in Mechanics	15:45	Evaluation and close of course

Professor John

John is an experienced teacher, author and examiner. He was Professor of Mathematics Education at a university in the south of England for over 20 years. He now teaches A-level Mathematics as the Mathematics Professor in Residence at an independent school and works with groups of able and talented students from Key Stage 3 and 4 in the school, providing an enrichment programme.

Within his freelance role, John runs one-day workshops for able and talented primary and secondary students in mathematics. He has many years’ experience delivering well-received professional development courses for teachers both at a national and an international level. John has published widely, including the Do Brilliantly at Revision guides for AS and A2 Mathematics.
