The drive to improve the educational experience for pupils who are often hard to reach and motivate is key to the success of the PRU.
In its recent report into successful practice in PRUs, OfSTED stated that it is essential for PRUs to have a well designed curriculum to improve basic skills and to re-engage learners through interesting experiences. One of its key recommendations was 'to use local facilities well to provide a good curriculum' and identifying how this might be achieved is essential to achieve such success. As well as drawing upon local resources, PRUs need to maximise the expertise of their SIP (School Improvement Partner) in this process to improve both provision and outcomes.
Behaviour and inclusion remain crucial issues and there is much good practice nationally. However, new approaches to managing, motivating and reintegrating pupils are essential if pupils are to improve both their basic and employability skills. De-escalation techniques, mentoring and a focus on the Social and Emotional Aspects of Learning (SEAL) have all been used to achieve these goals.
This one-day conference will offer delegates practical strategies to improve overall effectiveness and raise pupil achievement in PRUs. There will be examples of good practice from PRU practitioners, as well as other key professionals.
