ADHD is a diagnosis characterised by symptoms of extreme inattentiveness, hyperactivity and impulsivity. It is estimated to effect between 3-5% of school age pupils in the United Kingdom.
ADHD is associated with a range of learning, socio-emotional and maturation issues and often results in difficult and disruptive behaviours in both classroom and social situations.
The aim of this course is for delegates to be able to understand and identify the issues of ADHD within the SEN agenda and its occasional interaction/overlap with related learning difficulties such as Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, Oppositional Defiant Disorder and Conduct Disorder and consider the options for inclusive practice. Management options including behaviour modification and the role of medication and the issues of diet and other alternative options will be clearly outlined.
We will also consider the inter-relationship with teachers, parents and carers of students with ADHD and how to help to advise on management strategies to produce greater communication systems between the school and home.
Aims of the course are to:
• Explain the background, history and diagnosis of ADHD and consideration of current polices in relation to ADHD within the UK
• Provide a range of Behaviour Modification and multi-agency options for management of pupils with ADHD.
• Consider the choice of medical options for the management of ADHD, as well as diet and alternative treatment options
• Provide practical advice on supporting supervisors with specific students.
