Course members will leave with a clear understanding of the range and causes of problems with reading and spelling for eleven to fourteen year olds. They will be given proven approaches for tackling them in the context of pupils' normal school work, as well as specific teaching techniques that have been shown to be effective with the most difficult problems.
These will include the needs of pupils assessed as dyslexic, and of pupils with English as an Additional Language. The course will also include techniques for strategic planning and evaluation.
Aims of the course are to:
* Give participants a clear picture of the range of reading and spelling problems, their causes and how to tackle them.
* Provide a clear understanding of teaching techniques, and how and why they work.
* Describe effective methods of planning, assessment and monitoring.
