Interactive Mathematics Teaching at Higher and Advanced Higher Levels
Course code:
MAT022
Mathematics teachers are often criticised for creating environments in which mostly 'passive' learning is taking place. This course will provide teachers with a variety of 'hightech' and 'low-tech' activity-based approaches to all areas of the curriculum that integrate different learning styles into curriculum delivery - rather than simply regarding mathematics as a series of techniques to learn by rote. As well as providing clear guidelines on how best to get the best out of resources such as Autograph and Tarsia software (for producing card matching and 'domino' activities) etc. teachers will also receive a wealth of resources that will be of immediate use in the classroom.
Aims of the course are to: * To help move from the concept of 'teaching' towards becoming a 'director of learning' * Helping learners take greater responsibility for their own learning * Provide teachers with ideas and techniques to promote more 'open' questioning * Discuss ways of engaging all learners in mathematical discussion (both whole class and small groups)
