The Education Bill 2011, addresses fundamental concerns regarding what teachers should and should not be allowed to do when it comes to handling pupils physically. A clear understanding of the right of teachers and staff to search pupils balanced against a knowledge of the rights of the child is a basic requirement of all teaching staff. When handling pupils with special educational needs and disabilities there are a number of health and safety aspects which need to be followed to protect staff and pupils This course provides an overview of the legal framework relating to handling pupils, the roles and responsibilities of staff and what the law says about confidentiality and safeguarding children. It additionally provides the opportunity of learning effective and appropriate ways of handling pupils with a range of special and additional educational needs.
This course is not about behavioural management, but about enabling all teachers to feel confident in their knowledge and practice of how best to relate physically with all pupils.
