Art and Design as a Creative Force in the Primary School Curriculum

Course code:
PRI012
The recent Rose primary review proposals have a specific focus on understanding the Arts and design as one of the areas of learning. Meaningful learning should be the main aim of the primary curriculum - and Art and Design provides a relevant and purposeful point of connection between different areas of learning, and the communication of those thoughts and ideas in visual form.

This course will look at how Art and Design can be a creative force in the current and future primary curriculum and offer practical tips about content and processes, creativity and cultural understanding, cross curricular and thematic projects. It will also consider the role of ICT within Art and Design and the emergence of new technologies as an integral part of the subject and in relation to the growth of the creative industries as a career route for children. The role of the art co-ordinator in supporting the professional development needs of the whole school staff will also be considered.
